The hydrocarbons are measured using a Flame Ionization Detector (FID), in combination with gas chromatography (GC). A radiation detector is a device for measuring nuclear, electromagnetic or light radiation. A nuclear radiation detector identifies nuclear radiation by measuring the emission of ionizing radiation of alpha particles, beta particles and gamma rays. Also referred to as a geiger counter, a nuclear radiation detector consists of two main elements: the processing electronics and the geiger tube. The geiger tube is filled with low-pressure inert gas like helium, argon or neon. If radioactive radiation occurs, the inert gas is ionized. An anode within the geiger tube registers the quantity of ionized particles numerically correlating with the strength of the radioactive radiation. The radioactivity measurement is then displayed on the LCD screen of the geiger counter or nuclear radiation detector.

Like a Hawk with its remarkable vision, the Hawk Radius Probe “sees” things that other probes cannot. The high sensitivity weatherized pancake sensor can provide early warning of changing ambient radiation conditions, while the energy compensated detector can accurately report penetrating gamma radiation dose rate at elevated levels. Radius probes are typically deployed as part of an environmental radiation monitoring program, or for safety and security systems. In its standard configuration the probe detects beta, low energy gamma and x-radiation with one channel and energy compensated penetrating gamma radiation levels with a second channel. It can be configured to detect alpha radiation as well. The Hawk® Radius has been deployed worldwide in demanding conditions for protecting communities and collecting environmental radiation data. It can be deployed easily and requires minimum maintenance. The Radius is compatible with Medcomʻs GeigerLink adapter and the IMI Gateway App for use with personal computers. It can also be used with most data loggers including popular Campbell Scientific models.

Flame Ionization Detector
-
A flame ionization detector converts a hydrocarbon gas concentration into an electrical signal. The flame is hydrogen fueled and burns in hydrocarbon free combustion air. Either side of the flame are two electrodes between which an electric field is generated by means of a polarization voltage. The sample is pre-mixed with the fuel gas and heated in the flame to a temperature at which the hydrocarbon molecules ‘crack’ and CH fragments appear. These CH fragments are oxidated by the oxygen in the combustion air resulting in the formation of CHO+ ions. The ion current then passes to the electrodes and the resulting current measured is proportional to the quantity of C atoms derived from organic compounds.The Thermo-FID features two separate microprocessor controlled pressure compensations to avoid any influence from environmental or sample conditions. In addition, the complete Thermo-FID range of analyzers are equipped with a flame trap that is used as a heated sample inlet filter. The measurement chamber and all material in contact with the sample gas are heated between 120°C and 200°C to avoid condensation.

Teledyne e2v HiRel Microdosimeter is a compact hybrid microcircuit which directly measures total ionizing dose (TID) absorbed by an internal silicon test mass. The test mass simulates silicon die of integrated circuits on-board a host spacecraft in critical mission payloads and subsystems. By accurately measuring the energy absorbed from electrons, protons, and gamma rays, an estimate of the dose absorbed by other electronic devices on the same vehicle can be made. The Microdosimeter can operate from a wide range of input voltages. The accumulated dose is presented to three dc linear outputs and one pseudo-logarithmic output giving a dose resolution of 14 µrads and a measurement range up to 40 krads. These outputs are intended to be directly connected to most analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) or spacecraft housekeeping analog inputs (0-5 V range), which makes minimal demands on the host vehicle. The Microdosimeter incorporates a test function to allow electrical testing of the hybrid without the need for a radiation source.
