Shaft Speed Sensors
Electro-Sensors offers many shaft speed sensors for virtually any environment. Our Hall-Effect and Magnetoresistive Sensors sense magnetic targets and work with our magnetic pulsers (Discs, Wraps, and Wheels). Our proximity sensors sense ferrous metal targets, including bolt-heads, screws, gearteeth and keyslots. Our speed sensors monitor shaft speed of equipment and output data as PNP, NPN, or 4-20 mA signals. The sensor data can be used by facilities to monitor machinery and safeguard equipment. Monitoring shaft speed is a fundamental aspect of hazard monitoring and should be utilized by any facility with rotating shafts.

Speed Sensors
DHE (Differential Hall Effect) sensors give an output when subjected to a changing magnetic field. The field is set up by a magnet inside the sensor body and changes when ferromagnetic teeth are passed beneath the sensor (no magnets are required in the target). To improve noise resistance, the sensor has two Hall effect elements and only responds to changes in magnetic field strength corresponding to tooth passing frequencies above 15Hz. As each tooth passes the sensor, the digital state of the output changes.

The digital magnetic sensor's solid state internal analog to digital converter creates a digital output signal from the magnetic pickup's analog signal created by the excitation due to a passing target. The digital output from sensing a vehicle's rotating gear or a cotter key slot can be read by counters, meters or governing instrumentation.

SPECTEC's frequency to current and frequency to voltage converters for passive and active magnetic speed sensors and all digital speed sensors fit in a variety of explosion-proof elbow enclosures or can be DIN rail mounted via special adapters. These signal conditioners change the sinusoidal input to a linear current or voltage output respectively. The 4-20 mA and 10-50 mA signal converter has many applications in the flow industry. Shaft Speed Switches
A speed switch senses rotating shaft speed, comparing it to one or more settable over/under/zero speed alarm trip-points. A shaft speed sensor detects magnets embedded in a shaft-mounted pulser wrap/disc. As the shaft rotates, the passing magnets are detected across an air-gap as pulses with frequency proportional to shaft RPM. When a conveyor belt or bucket elevator begins to slip the pulse frequency (shaft RPM) crosses to the alarm side of a trip-point threshold, a corresponding relay de-energizes, providing shutdown or alarm.
