90-Degree Optical Hybrid
Six-port hybrid devices have been used for microwave and millimeter-wave detection systems since the mid-1990s and are a key component for coherent receivers. In principle, the six-port device consists of linear dividers and combiners interconnected in such a way that four different vectorial additions of a reference signal (LO) and the signal to be detected are obtained. The levels of the four output signals are detected by balanced receivers. By applying suitable baseband signal processing algorithms, the amplitude and phase of the unknown signal can be determined.

The 96xx series DDS generators deliver the highest performance in both speed and resolution. The series includes produts between one and 24 synchronous channels. DDS – Direct Digital Synthesis – is a method for generating sine waves from a single, fixed-frequency reference clock and is widely used in signal generation applications. The DDS functionality implemented on Spectrum Instrumentation’s AWG platform is based on the principle of adding multiple “DDS cores” to generate a mul?ti-carrier (multi-tone) signal, with each carrier having its own well-defined frequency, amplitude and phase. The PI-41400 is a dual channel Clock Driver card capable of operating up to 190 MHz into a 50-ohm load and up to 80 MHz at an amplitude of 8 volts into a 1-megohm load. Into a high impedance load the output voltage range is from a –3 volts to 8 volts with the output pulse amplitude ranging from 0.5 V to 9 V. When driving a 50 load the voltage range is –1.5 volts to 4.5 volts with the output pulse amplitude ranging from 0.25 V to 4.5 V. The rise and fall times of the output pulse are variable from 1.2 ns to 9 ns into a 50-ohm load and <5 ns to 9 ns into a HiZ load. The output pulse amplitude and the load being driven determine the range of variability. The driver output can be set for tri-state operation and the output polarity can be set for ‘Normal’ or ‘Inverted’ operation through software.

Transmission Line Pulse testing, or TLP testing, is a method for semiconductor characterization of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection structures. In the Transmission Line Pulse test, high current pulses are applied to the pin under test (PUT) at successively higher levels through a coaxial cable of specified length. The applied pulses are of a current amplitude and duration representative of the Human Body Model (HBM) event (or a Charged Device Model – CDM – event in the case of Very Fast TLP, or VF-TLP).
