Inductive Sensors

In general, inductive proximity switches consist of four basic elements: a coil, an oscillator, a threshold switch and an output stage with short-circuit protection.The oscillator generates a high frequency, electromagnetic alternating field which is emitted from the active face of the coil.Eddy currents are induced in a metal object that enters this field. These eddy currents draw energy from both the electromagnetic field and from the oscillator which is consequently attenuated.The more energy taken the closer the metal object moves towards the active face. The threshold switch switches on the output stage at a defined attenuation value.In proximity switches with a DC voltage supply, this switch is designed as an NPN transistor which switches the connected load to the negative pole or as a PNP transistor which switches the load to the positive pole. The output stage is a thyristor or a triac in AC voltage switches.

The LilyPad Light Sensor is a sewable breakout board with an ALS-PT19 light sensor built in and ready to use right away. Each sensor outputs voltage between 0V and 3.3V depending on the level of ambient light shining on it. As more light is applied on the sensor, more current will flow from the board through the signal tab to the microcontroller you connect the sensor to. If the sensor receives no light, no current will flow through it. In a typical indoor lighting situation, the sensor will output around 1 to 2V. Adding this board into your next e-textile or wearable project will really open up the possibilities by being able to incorporate light level sensing capabilities.

The sensor consists of a Hall Effect element, and a shaft which houses a magnet. The EM-6873 Loop Sensor Antenna uses passive circuits to transform magnetic field components between 20 Hz – 100 kHz to an equivalent open circuit two-terminal voltage on the receiving instrument. Use of the conversion Factor Chart, supplied with each antenna, will yield the strength of the magnetic induction field referenced to a uniform field. The loop is electrostatically shielded and therefore is sensitive only to the magnetic component (B-field) of the electromagnetic fields.
