The QPA8 can be an attractive alternative to either the manually operated microwave attenuator switches, which are expensive and are switched very slowly, or the relay attenuators which are expensive and wear out quickly. Attenuation is controlled in standard steps of 0.0625 dB. The 10 bit programmable range results in the full 210=1024 steps yielding a dynamic range of 0 to 63.9375dB. The HMC7748 is a multistage power amplifier (PA) that provides 25 W of saturated output power across the band of 2 GHz to 6 GHz. It draws 0.7 A from a 12 V supply and up to 4 A from a 28 V supply. Input signals of as much as −8 dBm are acceptable, and the module has small signal gain of 60 dB. The 12 V supply is regulated internally and generates the negative voltage required for the gate bias. Built-in bias sequencing prevents the drain voltages for the amplifier stages from being applied without the negative voltage present, which protects the amplifiers if 28 V is applied without 12 V supply applied.

Designed as a companion probe to Models 12C and 18C for driving integrated circuit lines so the Model 12C and 18C can be used to measure the response of adjacent nodes. The Model 7 consists of a flexible 6 foot, 50 ohm coaxial cable accurately terminated to 50 ohms in order to avoid undesirable reflections. A special miniature connector receives replacement coaxial probe tips that provide a shielded environment to within 3 mm of the fine tungsten probe point, thus minimizing capacitive coupling to other parts of the circuit. The replaceable coaxial probe tips are offered in various point sizes and can also be bent to any shape in order to accommodate a variety of probing geometries.
